Falkland Islands by Private Car The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean, located about 250 nautical miles from the coast of mainland South America, consisting of East Falkland, West Falkland and 776 lesser islands. Whether you are looking for adventure or seeking quieter pleasures, the Falklands are a great place to relax and unwind. Saturday – Punta Arenas | Chile to Darwin | Goose Green  | Depart Chile to the Falkland Islands. Arrive at Mount Pleasant International Airport; meeting and transfer to the settlements of Darwin/Goose Green. Darwin, established in 1859 as a ranching settlement was named after Charles Darwin, who spent time here during his travels. Today, it is a large working settlement offering superb accommodations and a perfect location just 40 minutes from the airport. Overnight at the Darwin House, a lovely guesthouse set in a picturesque settlement – a perfect way to begin any Falkland Islands exploration.

Day 2-3 Sunday & Monday – Carcass Island  | Depart Darwin on the internal flight to Carcass Island for a two-night stay. Magellanic Penguins nest around the settlement and a Gentoo colony is only a short walk away. Time to explore scenic Leopard Beach and Stanley Hill with their abundant array of wildlife and photographic opportunities! During your stay, enjoy a full day boat excursion to West Point Island. Explore Devil’s Nose, where Black Browed Albatross and Rockhopper can be seen. If the weather is favourable it may be possible to circumnavigate the entire island. Return to Carcass Island for overnight. (B, L, D) |
Day 4-5 Tuesday & Wednesday – Sea Lion Island  | Transfer to the airstrip for the internal flight to Sea Lion Island, the most southerly-inhabited island of the Falklands group. Beautiful plantations of spectacular tussac grass cover part of the island and provide a perfect habitat and protection for much of the islands fauna and wildlife. There are dazzling white beaches, dramatic cliffs, fresh water ponds all within walking distance of the lodge. During your two-nights on the island, there will be time to explore at leisure. An introductory excursion will help to familiarize you with the islands layout and wildlife locations. The many different species of birds that can be seen on the island include four species of penguin, prime location for Rockhopper, Southern Sea Lion and large groups of Elephant Seal and the chance to encounter Orca. Thursday – Stanley  | Internal flight today to Stanley, capital of the Falklands, with the largest population in the islands; transfer to the Malvina House Hotel for a two-night stay. Despite its relatively small size, Stanley, a colourful seaside town, offers all the amenities and interests expected of a capital city. Visit the city’s small but interesting museum, war memorials and enjoy the warm hospitality of the local people. Stop to see Christchurch Cathedral, Whalebone Arch and the many monuments along the sea wall. (B) |
Friday – Stanley  | Full day excursion by 4 x 4 vehicle with a driver/guide to Volunteer Point. As you travel overland, past Johnson’s Harbour, arrive at Volunteer Beach. Here, you’ll see the islands largest breeding colony of King Penguin, along with colonies of Gentoo and Magellanic Penguins. A box lunch will be provided today. Return to your hotel in Stanley for overnight. (B, L)

Carcass House - Carcass Island  | Carcass Island is around an hour’s flying time from Stanley in the north west of the archipelago. The farm house has recently been upgraded, offering a comfortable, friendly atmosphere and a home from home experience. Magellanic and gentoo penguins breed here and numerous other birds can be seen as the island is rat and cat free. Marine mammals are also plentiful with elephant seals on the north-west point. Carcass Island is small enough to be explored on foot with sandy beaches and rugged clifftops; alternatively drop-offs/pick-ups can be arranged or use of the Land Rover – all free-of-charge. Boat trips can be organised to nearby West Point Island where black-browed albatross breed. |
Darwin House - Darwin/Goose Green  | The lovely Darwin House is a clean and tidy bed and breakfast-style establishment.
Rooms are spacious, some rooms are en-suite others have shared bathrooms. Virtually self sufficient for everything from food to power Ken and Bonnie are fantastic hosts with a wealth of knowledge about the Falklands, sitting down in the evening and chatting to them is truly a pleasure.
From the lodge you can walk along the coast to Goose Green or even play the short pitch and put golf course, although you should be wary of losing balls in the diddle-dee. |
